SOme extra points
- This is a holiday park where you can stay in your boat in the Marina, rent a holiday home or bring your campervan.
- It is very modern and has been built in the style of the local Volendam houses.
- The town is a great place to visit to get a real feel of traditional dutch culture.
- Make sure you have cash (Euros) to pay when you arrive. They didn’t take card payments when we were there. They also take a €10 deposit from you at the beginning of your stay and give you a pass card for the showers, bin and gate at the entrance to the marina pontoon. This is returned when you return the pass.
- The showers here are excellent! (Have you noticed how ofter I comment on the showers yet?! These are a big draw to a marina for me as there is nothing better than a nice long hot shower in a warm room after a sail and nothing worse than a cold short one in a cold breezy room!) They were a good size, hot (yippee!) and the room was lovely and warm. Just a pointer though – if you don’t like a draughty shower room, go in the evening when the doors stay shut and people need to use their passes to get in. I went in the day and the doors were wide open which led to a grumpy Robyn as I was expecting a much nicer shower after the one I’d had previous evening! Also, these are mixed showers although there are plenty to choose from and you get your own cubicle.
- There are a small number of bikes available to borrow from the marina office but you can’t have them for long. A trip into town and back only is fair so they can be used by the other people using the marina too!
- The town isn’t far to walk to. Maybe 15-20 minutes and it’s really nice to see all the local building styles on your way in. The traditional feel continues when you get to the town. It was fairly busy when we were there but still well worth a visit. (Make sure you try a waffle!)
- There is a large unused windmill about a 5-10 minute walk behind the holiday park (go in the opposite direction to the town) which was lovely to see.
- There is a small shop on site for essentials but there is a much larger (and cheaper) supermarket in the town for supplies. Pretty much everything you can find on site can be found much cheaper in town in true holiday park style!
- There is also a small chandlery on site if you need anything boat related! (Isn’t there always something to fix?!)
- We received a 4th night free which made this marina incredibly good value for us (one of the best I think!) €17.50 per night (€1.75 per metre per night) but it worked out to €13.13 a night after the discount! Great value for such a nice marina with great facilities.
- Multiple restaurants and even a Spa and hairdressers on site here!
- If we went back up that way, Marina Volendam would definitely be on my list of go to places.
